Borderlands 4 Gets Creative: Photo Mode Arrives Alongside Key Reworks, But Can It Reinvigorate the Vault?
Gearbox Software and publisher 2K have dropped Major Update 1.030 (version 1.030.000, Patch 1.30) for their latest looter-shooter, Borderlands 4. Rolled out on January 29, 2026, this update finally brings the long-anticipated Photo Mode, along with a suite of stability and performance enhancements. Critically, it also delivers a rework of Vault Hunter Harlowe's Zero-Point skill. The patch is now live across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
Frame the Mayhem: Photo Mode's Late Debut
The headline feature of Major Update 1.030 is undoubtedly the addition of Photo Mode, accessible directly from the Pause Menu during gameplay. We appreciate the effort to bring this feature to players, even if its arrival is a significant post-launch event. Creative Director Graeme Timmins had previously confirmed in June 2025 that Photo Mode was a deliberate post-launch addition, stating that core gameplay and quality-of-life improvements for the September 2025 launch took precedence. While understandable, we can't help but feel that a feature now considered standard in many AAA titles, especially those with rich visual design like Borderlands, should have been present at release. Community discussions around its initial absence certainly highlighted a desire for it.
The new Photo Mode offers extensive customization, allowing players to truly craft their in-game screenshots. From adjusting camera position with standard controls and modifying the Field of View (FOV) to fine-tuning depth of field and camera angles, the options are robust. Players can also apply visual filters, tweak brightness, contrast, saturation, and gain, add vignettes, and even alter the time of day. For those pristine shots, the ability to toggle the visibility of Player Characters, Summons, NPCs, Enemies, Damage Numbers, game logos, and letterboxing is a welcome touch. These features rival, and in some areas, exceed what was offered in Borderlands 3's Photo Mode, making it a powerful tool for community content creation.
However, a crucial caveat exists: while Photo Mode automatically pauses all action in single-player, it does not do so in online multiplayer sessions. This design choice, while likely intended to prevent disruptions, requires players to be extremely cautious when trying to capture moments with friends, significantly limiting its practical use in co-op. The feature is also unavailable during cutscenes and console splitscreen play. Screenshots are captured using platform-specific tools (F12/Print Screen on PC, Share button on PS5, Capture button on Xbox Series X), and players are encouraged to share their creations by tagging @Borderlands or uploading them to the Borderlands 4 Steam Community hub.
Beyond the Lens: Core Fixes and Harlowe's Transformation
Beyond the visual flair of Photo Mode, Major Update 1.030 delves into numerous technical and gameplay issues, a necessary step for a game that has seen its share of post-launch criticisms. The patch aims to stabilize mission and Vault Card progression, improve the reliability of world events and boss encounters, and implement extensive fixes across several categories, including weapons, user interface, visuals, audio, overall performance, and general stability. While these fixes are essential, we believe such fundamental issues should ideally be resolved closer to launch to ensure a smoother player experience from the outset.
A particularly noteworthy gameplay adjustment is the rework of Vault Hunter Harlowe's Zero-Point skill. Previously, Zero-Point was often regarded as one of Harlowe's weaker abilities, primarily criticized for only being able to suspend a single target and having poor synergy with her other skills early on. The rework now incorporates the benefits of the previous "Inertia" Augment directly into the base skill, allowing kills in Stasis to reset duration, search for new targets, and accelerate decay. The "Inertia" Augment itself has been redesigned to focus on increasing Harlowe's Slam Damage, spawning elemental projectiles, and boosting Status Effect Damage and Chance. This change aims to make Zero-Point feel "more satisfying and better balanced" relative to Harlowe's other skill trees. In our view, a significant character rework this early post-launch suggests that the initial balancing might have missed the mark, but we are optimistic that this will open up new and more viable build possibilities for Harlowe players.
The Long Road Ahead: SHiFT Codes and a Packed 2026 Roadmap
As a little incentive, players can redeem a new SHiFT code (THFB3-R9XKK-CFBJW-T33BB-9R3CC) to unlock the "Gourd Your Loins" Vault Hunter Head and "Hex Appeal" Weapon Skin. This code remains valid until December 31, 2030, and requires a copy of Borderlands 4, a SHiFT Account, and an internet connection. Free cosmetics are always a welcome bonus, though a single head and skin feel like a minor offering compared to the broader content updates.
Looking ahead, Gearbox Software has outlined an ambitious 2026 roadmap for Borderlands 4, a move we see as a clear attempt to re-engage its player base and deliver on post-launch promises. The first quarter of the year is slated to bring two more major updates and paid DLC packs, specifically Bounty Pack 2 and Story Pack 1. Following this, the second quarter promises free content, including a level cap increase and cross-platform saves – a feature we believe should have been available at launch, much like cross-play was. This quarter will also introduce new free endgame content, such as a second raid boss and a Takedown. Four additional paid DLC packs are planned for release throughout the remainder of 2026.
Gearbox has indicated that the Story Pack DLCs for Borderlands 4 will be comparable in scope to those of Borderlands 3, which were generally well-received for their "intense looter shooter action, gripping stories, and killer new loot". We remain cautiously optimistic about the quality and impact of this planned content. While an extensive roadmap is positive, the sheer volume of content promised needs to be delivered without compromising quality, especially given the game's current standing. The next update, Borderlands 4 update 1.040, is anticipated to deliver further fixes, suggesting that the team is committed to continuous improvement.
The Numbers Game: Where Does Borderlands 4 Stand?
Borderlands 4, built on Unreal Engine 5, launched on September 12, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release following on October 3, 2025. The game notably supported cross-platform play across all platforms from day one. At its launch, the title garnered significant attention, reaching over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. This initial peak was the highest for the franchise on Steam, nearly tripling Borderlands 2's all-time concurrent player count.
However, the PC version's steep minimum requirements were identified as a barrier for over half of all Steam users. This, combined with reported performance issues and a perceived lack of compelling endgame content, led to a rapid decline in player numbers. Within two months of its September 2025 launch, the player base on Steam plummeted by 96%, falling to approximately 10,000 concurrent players. As of January 2026, the peak concurrent player count on Steam remains just over 10,000, with most days seeing closer to 5,000 players.
This sharp drop, while somewhat common for live-service looter-shooters, is particularly concerning for a major title within months of release. To put this in perspective, Borderlands 3 peaked at over 90,000 concurrent players on Steam six months after its initial Epic Games Store launch. Even some other popular looter-shooters like Destiny 2 see higher concurrent player counts months after major DLC releases, with figures often ranging from 43,000 to 79,000. The current Borderlands 4 numbers are more in line with the lower end of the genre's daily active users rather than a thriving new release. The challenge for Gearbox now is not just to deliver new content, but to prove that Borderlands 4 can sustain an active and engaged community beyond its initial hype.
