After a quarter-century wait, a new age has dawned in Sanctuary. Blizzard Entertainment has finally broken tradition, introducing the Warlock, the first new class in Diablo II in 25 years, with the release of the Reign of the Warlock DLC on February 11, 2026. This new class profoundly changes how players approach the classic ARPG. We've explored the Warlock's forbidden magic and are here to guide you through mastering this powerful new character.
Getting Started: Unleashing the Warlock
Before you can command demonic legions or rain down chaos, you need access to the Reign of the Warlock content. The Warlock class is part of this new DLC, which requires the Diablo II: Resurrected base game. If you're new to Diablo II: Resurrected, the Infernal Edition is your ideal choice, as it bundles the base game with the Reign of the Warlock DLC. This edition is also available on Steam for the first time, a welcome addition for PC players.
For existing Diablo II: Resurrected owners, the Reign of the Warlock DLC can be purchased separately. Xbox Game Pass members, while having access to the base Diablo II: Resurrected game, will still need to purchase the DLC independently to play the Warlock.
To ensure your system is ready for the Warlock's dark powers, here are the recommended PC specifications:
The Warlock's Arsenal: Skill Trees and Specializations
The Warlock offers three distinct skill trees, each providing a unique approach to tearing through the hordes of Hell: Chaos, Demon, and Eldritch. Understanding these is essential for forging your ultimate Warlock.
- Chaos: This tree focuses on fire and magic damage, utilizing sigils, fire waves, and entropy clouds to manipulate enemy states and unleash devastating area-of-effect assaults. If you enjoy spellcasting with a focus on elemental destruction and crowd control, Chaos is an excellent path.
- Demon: For those who prefer to command the forces of Hell, the Demon tree is your calling. It revolves around powerful demon summons like Goatmen, Tainted, and Defilers. You can bind almost any demon to your will and even consume or sacrifice your summons for personal benefits, granting temporary buffs like increased magic damage. This offers a safe and powerful playstyle, particularly for those new to the class or the game.
- Eldritch: This tree offers a more physical and hybrid approach, blending physical attacks with powerful hexes (cripple, debilitate, explode) and AoE blasts. It even allows for weapon manipulation, astral projections, and weapon mirages, enabling a unique melee-caster hybrid.
Our Recommendation: For new Warlock players, we suggest starting with the Chaos tree, prioritizing early-game AoE skills. Its strong early-game Area of Effect (AoE) damage makes progressing through Normal and Nightmare difficulties smooth. Once you're comfortable, experimenting with the Demon tree for its powerful summons can provide a different, equally effective, and often safer playstyle. The Eldritch tree, while exciting, often requires more specific gear and a deeper understanding of the class's synergies to shine.
The Foundation of Power: Attribute Allocation
Unlike some other classes that spread their points thinly, Warlocks have a straightforward, highly effective attribute allocation strategy:
- Strength & Dexterity: Only invest enough points to meet the requirements of your gear. Don't go overboard; these are merely stepping stones to equipping your desired items.
- Vitality: This is your primary dump stat. Pour all remaining points here. Increased life total translates directly into survivability, allowing you to withstand more hits from Sanctuary's relentless demons.
- Energy: For most Warlocks, especially in the late game, we advise against investing in Energy. Generous +Mana from items and mana leech will typically provide all the resources you need, making direct investment redundant. Early on, if you struggle with mana, a few points can be temporarily allocated, but plan to respec them later.
Wielding Forbidden Artifacts: Unique Warlock Mechanics and Gear
Beyond new spells, the Warlock introduces unique ways to interact with gear:
- Levitating Weapon: This revolutionary passive allows the Warlock to levitate their weapon, effectively wielding a two-handed weapon in one hand while simultaneously using an off-hand item. This opens up vast build flexibility, enabling combinations of powerful two-handed staves with shields or Grimoires, offering both offensive and defensive benefits that no other class can replicate.
- Grimoires: These are new Warlock-specific off-hand items that can roll with Warlock staff mods and inherent elemental damage, making them powerful sources of power.
- Daggers: A welcome change for new Warlocks is that daggers can now roll up to three +1-3 to any random Warlock Skill and are readily sold at vendors.
- New Item Sets: Keep an eye out for Bane's Garments (Normal) and Horazon’s Splendor (Elite), new Warlock-specific sets that will be essential for specific builds as you progress.
- Runewords and Uniques: The Reign of the Warlock DLC also introduces new Runewords like Authority, Coven, Void, Vigilance, and Ritual, alongside Unique items such as Ars Al'Diabolos, Dreadfang, Opalvein, Sling, and Hellwarden’s Will. These will shape optimal Warlock builds in the endgame.
- Sunder Charms Rework: Sunder Charms have also been reworked. "Latent Sunder Charms" now drop from Heralds in Terror Zones and can be crafted into "Renewed Sunder Charms" with various stats. This provides new avenues for tackling monster immunities.
Pushing the Limits: Expanded Endgame Challenges
The Reign of the Warlock DLC adds more than just a class; it greatly expands the endgame, offering new challenges and rewards that Warlocks are uniquely positioned to conquer.
- Updated Terror Zones: Terror Zones have received an upgrade, allowing players to acquire consumables that let you choose which Act becomes terrorized. In Hell difficulty, be prepared for the exponentially more difficult Heralds of Terror. Normal Terrorized Zones now rotate every 30 minutes, keeping the grind fresh. This added control over content is a huge quality-of-life improvement, letting you target specific farming areas.
- The Colossal Ancients: A new pinnacle endgame encounter awaits. You can unlock it by combining five statues, dropped by terrorized Act bosses, in the Horadric Cube. Defeating these Colossal Ancients rewards you with powerful Unique Jewels (Level 75), though only one can be equipped at a time, and their specific stats depend on the Ancient last defeated. This provides a clear, challenging goal for high-level Warlocks seeking to maximize their power.
Modernizing Mayhem: Quality-of-Life Upgrades for All
While not Warlock-specific, the quality-of-life updates introduced with this expansion are a huge boon for any player, especially when learning a new class:
- Customizable Loot Filter: This feature dramatically reduces screen clutter, allowing you to focus on the loot you actually desire. No more sifting through mountains of junk; you can tailor what you see, which is essential when hunting for those specific Warlock-boosting items.
- Advanced Stash Tabs: Finally, we can stack Gems, Runes, and other materials (up to 99 per stack) with auto-sorting capabilities. This is a massive improvement for inventory management, reducing the frustrating constant trips to town and making the farming experience much smoother.
- The Chronicle System: A new account-wide feature, the Chronicle system tracks all collected Unique items, Sets, and Runewords, detailing where and when they were found. It even offers rewards for completion, providing a satisfying meta-game for collectors and completionists.
The Evolving Sanctuary: Era System
Blizzard has also implemented a new era system, segmenting partitions for Diablo II Classic, Diablo II: Resurrected, and Diablo II: Reign of the Warlock. This means characters exist separately in each era. While you can transfer characters forward (Classic to Resurrected to Reign of the Warlock), you cannot transfer them backward. This approach is a thoughtful way to introduce new content while preserving the integrity of previous versions, allowing purists to enjoy the original experience without forced changes. However, it's a one-way trip for your characters, so plan your progression carefully.
Embracing the Warlock's Might
The Warlock is a major addition to Diablo II: Resurrected, offering diverse and engaging gameplay across its Chaos, Demon, and Eldritch skill trees. The accompanying Reign of the Warlock DLC also considerably enriches the overall experience with new endgame content, essential quality-of-life improvements, and a host of fresh gear to discover.
We are impressed by the depth and care put into this new class and its integration into such a beloved classic. The Warlock feels right at home in Sanctuary, providing both familiar themes and exciting new mechanics. Whether you prefer raining fire, commanding demons, or engaging in hex-infused melee, the Warlock has a path for you. We recommend exploring the dark powers that await.
