The narrative centers on Emma, a "blightborn" Sealer who wields unique plant-like hair for both movement and attack, and her loyal "malefact" companion, Koo. Their journey involves confronting the encroaching Blight, a mysterious force that transforms the environment in real-time, causing plains to become dense forests and spawning new enemies as players progress. This environmental mutation creates a world that feels alive and constantly challenging, adapting to the Blight's influence.

The experience features a unique hybrid combat system. Players will engage enemies with Emma's real-time sword attacks, while simultaneously issuing commands to Koo. Opening Koo's command menu slows down time, allowing for tactical deployment of the canine's skills. Successful parries are key to generating the points needed to activate Koo's special abilities, creating a fluid back-and-forth between offensive and defensive play. Beyond combat, Koo isn't just a battle partner: the companion aids in exploration by sniffing out hidden secrets and assisting with traversal, deepening the "one-person, one-dog" promise by making Koo essential to all aspects of the game.

The game's art direction, overseen by Kota Furushima with character designs for Emma and Koo by Pablo Uchida, has drawn comparisons to the evocative works of Studio Ghibli, particularly Princess Mononoke. The fact sheet reveals that the team directly involved in the game's development from Game Freak is relatively small, with much of the actual development outsourced to external partners. This isn't inherently negative, but it raises questions about the cohesive vision and internal expertise driving such a new IP, especially when compared to genre exemplars like Sekiro.

Managing expectations also presents a challenge.
