Google Messages is rolling out a safer Smart Replies flow with “Tap to draft,” which adds a suggested reply to the compose box instead of sending it immediately. The feature was tested in March, and the latest stable build is now seeing the change as Google keeps “Tap to send” as the default at launch.

The Smart Replies update is also being refined in the app’s settings: the newer Tap to send and Tap to draft options are now shown as radio buttons rather than a simple toggle. That makes the control clearer as Google continues iterating on one of Messages’ most error-prone shortcuts.
