Tombstone was introduced in Gerry Conway's the 1987 comic Web of Spider-Man #36. He is typically portrayed as a ruthless New York gangster who got into criminal activity in high school, extorting other students for protection money. He has also repeatedly persuaded the journalist Joseph Robertson to kill stories that would have exposed his crimes. The first version of the character was tall and strong, but didn’t have any superhuman abilities.
